How are ratings calculated?

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don't use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

The waste container fills up very quickly as it is very small. The package had a card indicating we could get a 10$ amazon gift card for a 4 or 5 star review. It was working ok at first, despite being smaller than we expected, so we left a 4 star review and submitted to get the gift card. They never provided anything and since then, we've had it jam a number of times and it really has been disappointing for the price. We are updating this to two stars first for the shady practice of buying positive reviews and second for the lack luster product.

Had another power sharpener before with normal blade in it and it always broke the pension tip, didn't last more then a year. Saw this one with the stainless steel sharpeners and different style so I think it works better and will last longer.
Works as it's supposed to and happy. Now my kids can sharpen all their pencils with ease.
**Update**
After using it for awhile we realized that when a pencil tip breaks off inside that there is no way to get it out. You just have to push really hard until it come out but it's not easy. (That's what it says in the manual). Also it doesn't come with three different settings for sharpness like it says? Other brands have switch on the side to adjust sharping style but this one doesn't have it so is misleading because in description it said that it had this and to be honest I would have bought another brand if I knew it didn't have this. But it sharpens nicely otherwise. Will keep for awhile and see how it works.

Just opened and sharpened almost the entire pencil case. Pencils come out smooth and sharp, it has more acute angle than the regular sharpened. My 6 year old has no issue using it, so less work for the parents. 2 things to note: first,
you need to hold the pencil firmly, otherwise it'll start spinning - first time I used it, it was a surprise when the pencil "jumped" out of the hand; second, the compartment for the shavings is a bit hard to remove, even for an adult.
Used it only when plugged in, didn't test with batteries.

I would give this 5 stars as it works as described, but just make sure when you pop the clear section off that you are already over a garbage can, it can make a huge mess since the hole to dump it out is on the inside, especially if it is VERY full. Tip, be over garbage or recycling bin, turn sharpener with the clear cup in the palm of your hand, then pull to pop it off (it is firmly in place, so pull hard), this way the hole will be upwards, you can then turn it to dump it out. Hint, try this tip before you fill it so you can get an idea on how firmly you need to pull it apart.

Tested with two pencils. One never made it, I could feel it being sharpened and then the tip broke three times. Upon hearing the breakage, of course I adjusted the strength not holding it too tight. The other pencil also broke but eventually made it, although the sharpener clearly did it unevenly as seen in the photo. This pencil has been used for a few months so I know the lead is centered. I've commenced the return process to send back. Like some complaints stated, this sharpener doesn't work. I thought such comment was too harsh and unreasonable, how could the sharpener not work?? But now I believe it, this thing really doesn't work. Not only that, the pictures are misleading!!! The sharpener is actually the same height as the charger!!!! Yes it's actually just the size of an adult fist!!!! Amazon needs to do something about this violation of inaccurate description. I expected it to be twice the size of the actual product, it really is made for kids.

While this product definitely sharpens a pencil - fast - it does not have the features stated. I bought this model because it was supposed to have three sharpness settings. It doesn't! The picture in the ad suggests there might be an adjustment on the top (the white markings?) but what I received doesn't have those markings and there is no switch that I can find. My first test of the product suggested that it might have two settings, but if you keep holding the pencil in there, it keeps grinding away. That brings me to the second false point: it doesn't "automatically shut off when finished". It automatically shuts off when you pull the pencil out. That's a bummer because a young child could grind away a lot of pencil crayon in a short period of time, assuming the child can actually hold onto the wildly spinning pencil. I have no issue with the size of the shavings container, only that it isn't the easiest thing to remove. This product is fine for adults and older kids, just not exactly as advertised.

ETA: I've had the sharpener for 5 months and it's still working great. Would definitely purchase again.

At first I was a tad disappointed because it didn't feel as sturdy and powerful as one I used in an office, but then I remembered that this is at a much cheaper price point than that product would be. I did have one instance of jamming, with a coloured pencil. To clear it out, I just sharpened a regular pencil, pushing it against the jammed bit of coloured lead until it cleared. I recommend sharpening your coloured pencils first, then regular pencils, in case you need to clear out a jam that way. I'm happy to have this sharpener so I won't get blisters sharpening tons of my kids' pencils by hand.

It arrived promptly, the box was a bit banged up, but the sharpener itself seemed to be fine. The only "complaint" I have about it is that it can sharpen unevenly, I think if you're careful to put the pencil exactly in the middle, or turn it slightly while it's sharpening, it won't do that. I love the fact that it has a cord, so I don't have to worry about batteries, it can sit on my desk plugged and never move so it doesn't get lost like the last one I had. I would echo what someone else said about emptying it over the garbage can as the shavings easily spill out.
